So you think it fits? The WOW Factor Part 1
Average, ordinary, invisible. These are NOT words that describe how most people want to look…but many find themselves slipping into this territory and losing touch with what it takes to SHOW UP and be noticed on a daily basis. What’s missing? What we like to call the “WOW Factor.” That little pop to your outfit that makes you memorable. Have you ever walked into a room and had a friend say “Wow, you look great!” That’s the WOW Factor. There’s something extra special about your look, and how you have presented yourself…to the point where others take notice, say something and remember you.
There is no one else like you in the world. When you walk into a room, your style, what you are wearing, begins to tell your story, before any words are shared.
Here at The Style Core, we love to help people tell their story with style and elicit that WOW!
Do you want to be seen as polished and trustworthy? Or artistic and creative? How about chic with a dash of approachable? We all have many dimensions to our personality. They all need to be expressed if we want to be known for who we really are, and NOT be defined simply by the clothes we were able to pull together.
First I’m going to tell you the four biggest style mistakes I see, so you can steer clear of these.
Poor fit.
The garment was manufactured for someone else’s body but doesn’t fit yours!
Visually unappealing proportion’s.
The top of the garment is either too long or too short for the rest of the outfit, causing your body to look disproportionate and unbalanced.
Accessory blunders.
Usually not enough accessories, but often if they are worn, the accessories are just not very well related to the outfit
Bland Hair and make up.
Not significantly styled or polished enough to show up.
. . . . . . . . .
Being aware of these four “biggest mistakes” is the first step to creating looks that tell your story with a WOW Factor.
Let’s take a closer look at the first mistake, poor fit. Chances are your fit issues will be one of the following four most common.
- The dreaded camel toe crotch (Those lines of pulled fabric are called ‘drag lines)
- Garments too small or too large at the waist
- Shirts too tight across the bosom
- Shirt sleeves that are too tight or too loose.
Q: What do these blunders communicate?
A: Probably NOT what you’re trying tell people about yourself!
Poor fit = I don’t really care about how I look
Which = I don’t care about me
Which = you don’t really need to care about me either
Am I wrong?!
You’ve got to be careful if you want people to care as much about you as you do.
We’ve all been there. Before you get overwhelmed, give yourself a manageable goal to accomplish.
Start with your top 3 favorite outfits. Take a picture of yourself from the front side and rear. You’ll probably need a friend to help with this part.
Now, go through the list of the top 4 FIT mistakes and see if any of them apply to the outfit. Are there draglines pointing to the area of clothing that is too tight? Make a note for what needs fixing in each outfit.
All of these issues are fixable, some more easily than others. Your two best resources at this point are your personal stylist and a good alterations tailor. Anyone who is trained in styling knows how to address each of these issues, and how to gracefully art direct a tailor to solve them.
Take care of the fit issues in your favorite outfits and notice the difference when you wear them. You’ll feel so much more comfortable and attractive. The static is gone, the outfit is now communicating what you want it say. Poor fit is like poor grammar or an out-of-focus picture. Its too hard to pay attention, so people stop trying. If you WANT TO BE SEEN make sure what you’re wearing fits! People’s eyes will open when they see you, they’ll be watching, listening, following YOUR STORY.
Bear in mind the top 4 style mistakes I mentioned so you can avoid those and tell visual stories that reveal how extraordinary you really are.
Figuring all this out on your own can be daunting and frankly, difficult…which is why we are here to support you. You can’t be an expert in everything!
